As a professor

This practical, well-researched guide introduces a comprehensive biliteracy framework and presents ten years of longitudinal evidence demonstrating that students can learn to read in two languages (Spanish and English using the DRA and EDL) and achieve proficiency on state-mandated content tests. The Literacy Squared team also demonstrates strategies that promote biliteracy from the start for simultaneous bilinguals, and they focus on four components of biliteracy: (1) oracy, (2) reading, (3) writing, and (4) metalanguage.

Educators can use the holistic biliteracy framework to inform their language policy, structure their programs, align curriculum development across languages, stimulate creative ways to team teach, and document student trajectories toward biliteracy, thus transforming teaching and learning effectively at the classroom and program levels.
